Volunteers
Volunteers are the essence of all communities and they are an integral part of most non- profit organizations.
Become a Board Member - Board Members, as stated in our Constitution and Bylaws, are elected by the membership of the Centre. Our Board Members are stewards for the centre’s business, personnel and financial matters. Board members serve as volunteers with a term of 2 years.
If becoming a Board Member appeals to you, please contact the Executive Director, Karen McLean, kmclean@fvcdc.org or 604.852.2686, who can forward you to the Chair of the Board of Directors.
Join an Event – The Fraser Valley Child Development Centre is involved in many in house and community events throughout the year, for example Awareness Campaigns, Children’s Christmas Parties, Developmental Fairs and more. We consider volunteers to be an integral part of every events success and we are thankful for their commitment to our events.
Volunteer with a program – Periodically our consultants and therapists require hands-on assistance during their programs. These opportunities are best suited for students currently enrolled at post secondary facilities and that foresee a future in working with children with developmental needs.
Join our membership - As a member you show your commitment to the Centre and the work we do. In addition you will have voting rights and be eligible to sit on the Board of Directors as well as receive an invitation to our Annual General Meeting and receive our quarterly newsletter.
We thank you for considering becoming a volunteer with the Fraser Valley Child
Development Centre, for further information please contact Nicole Misura, 604.852.2686

Volunteer Testimonials
While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about. ~Angela Schwindt On the last day of summer camp, a child who had been painfully shy for most of the week ran up to give me an impulsive hug before dashing out the door to join his family. As I watched them leave, I realized that in spite of being exhausted by a week of supervising a summer camp, I was proud of being able to contribute something valuable to the summer of these children.
In the weeks leading up to the camp, my days were filled with planning and organizing, and I was nervous to be supervising a group of kids whose behavior I was expecting to be difficult and unpredictable. Instead, I was impressed with their willingness to work hard and the cheerfulness they readily displayed. Everyone involved with camp made it a wonderful place to be-- the volunteers were selfless and energetic, and the therapists were professional.
Each morning, the children worked hard at therapy, and we spent the afternoons making rock pets, bead lizards, finger painting, decorating masks and singing songs. Everyone worked hard to make camp fun, including the campers, and it was wonderful to end the day with the children excitedly showing their parents the things they had accomplished each day.
Being a part of camp has given me a renewed respect for the responsibilities of being a parent, as well as a greater understanding of what it means to be a therapist. By the end of the week, I had fallen a little bit in love with each of the children, and I understand why the therapists at FVCDC have chosen the careers that they have. In helping these children discover have a happy summer, I was also rediscovering my own childhood and being reminded of all the things I loved about it. This experience has strengthened my resolve to be a teacher, and I would not have traded it for anything.

Working with a young girl with a developmental disability has provided me with such imperative knowledge and so much enjoyment in my life. Before I met Denby, I was searching for something that would provide me with a sense of purpose and achievement. After a couple of swimming lessons later, I did find that certain purpose and achievement with such a special, amazing girl!
Denby has been the joyful spark to my Saturdays! After a long week of suffering the demands of college (ie handing in papers, cramming for important tests and listening to boring lectures) it is always so nice to see Denby on a Saturday morning. With her tenacious spirit and beautiful smile, she always seems to lift my spirits and allows me to just have fun with her! As I am supportive of her, she is supportive of me, offering me a high-five here and there in the pool. And that high-five always makes me look forward to the following Saturday morning. Denby and her family have become an important part of my life, as I have frequent conversations with her mother and am always fascinated with her younger brother's new words or gestures!
I am very lucky to have been matched with this family, and thank the Kids in Action program for providing me with the opportunity to get to know such a positive, energetic, wonderful child!
