Fraser Health Assessment Network (FHAN) Assessment Clinic

The FVCDC provides assessment and diagnosis for children and youth who are experiencing complex developmental and behavioural conditions, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We provide these services under contract to the Fraser Health Authority.

The FVCDC Assessment Clinic serves children and adolescents (birth – 19 years) who reside in the communities of the Fraser Health Authority. This includes Surrey, Langley, and Maple Ridge.

Who Are the Clinics For?

Children and youth who are experiencing significant difficulties in multiple areas of function. These include:

• Development and learning
• Mental health and behaviour
• Adaptive and social skills
• Exhibits unusual facial features
• Suspected ASD or FASD
  
  

How Can I Have My Child Assessed?

Our Assessment Clinics do not accept referrals directly. All referrals must be made to FHAN (Fraser Health Assessment Network), and they then distribute the referrals to our Assessment Clinic for diagnostic assessments.

If you wish for your child to be assessed, follow these steps.

• Make an appointment with your family doctor to discuss your concerns.
• Your doctor will refer your child to a paediatrician to rule out possible medical causes for delays in communication or development.
• If ASD, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, or other complex developmental behavioural conditions are suspected, the doctor will make a referral to the FHAN for a diagnostic assessment.

Referrals for ASD may be made by family doctors, paediatricians, and child psychiatrists.

About Our Assessment Clinic

The Assessment Clinic has two broad goals:

• To provide children and their families with appropriate diagnoses and recommendations for service. We provide written reports to the families after the assessment.
• To help families better support and advocate for their diagnosed children.
  
  

The Assessment Clinic team is multi-disciplinary. It includes two registered psychologists, a paediatrician, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a social worker, and a key worker. Not all members are involved in every assessment.

We normally hold about three clinics every month.
